Born in Dullingham in Q1-1892 [Newmarket 3b:506], baptised in Dullingham on 4th February 1892, the son of William and Sarah Ann CLAYDON
(née LEWIS) of Church Lane, Dullingham.
1901 census...Frank [9] was at Lower Station Road,Newmarket with his father William[37], a blacksmith, born in Dullingham; his mother Sarah Ann[36], born in Newbury ,Berks; his brothers William Lewis [16], a groom born Eversley Cross,Hants; Harry [11] born Dullingham; Albert[4] born Newmarket, and his sisters Ellen [6] and Edith [3]both born in Newmarket. 1911 census...Frank [19] was now a grocers porter, at 5 Conway Terrace, All Saints Road,Newmarket with his parents; brother Ernest[23] a ropemaker born Dullingham, brother Albert [15], now an errand boy, and his sisters Ellen; Edith; Ada [10]; Mabel [7];Alice [5], and Minnie [3]. All four new sisters were born in Newmarket. One child had died Possibly he was the Frank Claydon who married Ada PHILLIPS in Newmarket Q2-1917. |

Enlisted in Warley, Essex where the 11th Battalion was first raised in September 1914, part of Kitchener's 3rd New Army. They went to Shoreham and then to Brighton in January 1915.
Returned to Shoreham in March and to Blackdown in June 1915. They landed in Boulogne on 30th August 1915. 7th C.C.S. was at Noeux-les-Mines at the time of his death. It is not possible, without his army records, to say when or where Frank was wounded, but the 11th Essex lost very few killed in the preceding week indicating no great action was involved. |
